Perhaps this is a tale of redemption and defiance against darkness.
Perhaps....
But Regulus is selfish. He is selfish in his love.

Regulus loved James. And so he would love his beloved's son and raise him as his own.
Preferably with his mentor, who acted like a mother-hen more than Kreacher did.
Honestly... he was twenty-one, Regulus wasn't going to just drop dead if they stopped protecting him.
....well hopefully not.
