Summary
When a lifelong resident begins noticing that his town is staging a horror story around his new friends, he realizes he’s not the hero of the narrative—just an error the script is learning how to erase.
Slight prologue:
Evan has lived in the town his whole life—quiet streets, familiar seasons, the comfort of things that never change—until the group arrives.
Mara, Ben, Priya, Dylan, and Lucas settle in like they were always meant to be there, and Evan drifts into their orbit without thinking. Lucas becomes the still point in the middle of everything, the person Evan notices before he means to. But soon the town begins to feel wrong: conversations repeat in different voices, houses stand like empty sets, moments stretch too long, waiting for a cue that never comes.
The town is telling a story.
It wants to bend the group into shapes it recognizes—joke, victim, martyr, monster—tropes to be made to suffer for an audience that doesn’t exist. Evan can feel the script tightening, guiding their steps, teaching the town how to hurt them better.
And the worst part is this:
Evan was never supposed to see the pattern at all—only to disappear neatly inside it.
