Summary
It started nicely. No trick, no unspoken rules, nothing that would have come stabbed them in the back later. They were both on the same page for this transaction, and very happy about the terms of it. It was a simple sexual relationship with no ambiguous feelings and no hope for it to develop into something else. They made it very clear. With the way they worked and lived, there was no place for anything close to dating for them. Not that they wanted to. It was the last thing they were looking for. It was a good deal, really. Pretty simple too.

In coming face to face with his mother, in a camp he never thought he'd see again, he realized that he must have been in an in-between place, trapped in the minutes before and after death. His mom would wake any minute and explain to him that she was an angel, or perhaps some other psychopomp–a word he learned from Enid while flipping through a few scavenged Sandman issues–and then she would take his hand and guide him to the afterlife.
