Summary
Set against the backdrop of season 3, Merlin and Arthur's relationship develops as it is put through various trials and tribulations. They grow closer than ever and push the bounds of propriety as their bond grows stronger, but Merlin's secret threatens to tear them apart and when it is revealed, everything they thought they knew about one another must be re-evaluated. In the end, the only question that needs to be answered is whether they love one another enough to overcome it.

Summary
When Arthur Pendragon wakes from a poisoning he shouldn't have survived, something is wrong. Not with his body, but with the shape of the world around him. Someone that no one remembers has gone missing, but Morgana tells him what she has Seen: that the tug he feels in his heart says this missing person is not dead. Somehow, this person paid a price to save Arthur, but it wasn't a life for a life, as the Balance requires.
Arthur is going to do everything in his power to find this person, even if the council believes he's going mad like his father.

Summary
All in all, Arthur was one of those men about whom it could be said that their heart was in the right place, although he did take great pains to hide it. Still, the core of decency made Merlin endure the thick layers of arrogance (and their thin crispy crust of arseholery) with more patience than he’d ever thought possible. There was indeed a promise of greatness about Arthur that Merlin was willing to believe in.

Summary
Arthur's eyes widen minutely, and Merlin can see fists tighten by his side, but he doesn't move out of Merlin's grasp, doesn't show any other reaction. And Merlin has never touched Arthur like this, never so unkindly but he's reached a boiling point, the thought of carrying on with this thankless routine is agonising.
His voice is almost a whisper when he speaks next. He leans in closer, unable to look at Arthur anymore, instead he says his next words a breath away from his ear. "You could thank me on your knees and it wouldn't come anywhere close to adequate appreciation."

In which Merlin is overwhelmed and underappreciated. Stretched thin between keeping the kingdom safe, playing the role of Arthur’s servant as well as the role of Gaius’ apprentice, and dealing with his magic, he snaps and quits. Arthur, of course, begins to realise the emptiness of life without Merlin. What follows is a mix of frustration, hurt, pining, and, finally, a reunion. Featuring the ever tired and concerned knights of the round table (except Gwaine, he doesn’t really give a shit.)
