    Shadow then looks back to the sky with a flat hum. “If it does fail… There won’t be anything left for me.”

    Blurry vision, looking over the dusty clearing. Most of the grass was torn up and gone, leaving exposed dirt and mud everywhere. The ground was also a deeper, darker color in most places, ranging closer to black, like char.

    He also notes several blobs lying scattered around on the destroyed land. He worries what those might be, but through the ringing in his ears, a quiet sound angled more above his head towards the trees, had his swaying vision shifting up to see a splotch of yellow lying further away.

    Green Hill, a small, sleepy seaside town, seems like the perfect place for a little vacation and a chance to regain emotional balance.

    At least, that’s what Shadow thought, until he found out he’d be sharing his cozy cottage with the most irritating blue hedgehog under the sun.

    Still, Sonic’s company may end up bringing far more into Shadow’s life than the hedgehog would ever care to admit.

    By the time the flowers bloom and spring draws to an end, nothing will ever be the same again.

    Contrary to popular belief, Sonic the Hedgehog is not a party person.

    He’d say he’s justified, given his notably bad track record with them, but it’s not even that. Once the fun with friends fades… the crowd, the music, the dancing, the touch, the almost-dying, the everything, it tends to take more out of him than he takes out of it. He'll make an exception to his distaste for informal, small parties among just friends… which is decidedly not what he’s invited to. Who sends invitations with gold-trimmed paper?

    …He can’t decline now, can he?

    Sonic the Hedgehog does not like formality. But Sonic the Hedgehog is a good friend. Unfortunately, those are mutually exclusive right now. So for his good friends, he’ll endure one party, one occasion, one night. He ends up gaining some unexpected insight while he's there. Or in other words, has some sense knocked into him. Maybe it wasn’t the party he disliked.
    Maybe the problem was just himself.

    Shadow stands abruptly. Even though his meal is only half finished, he opens the sack of coins hanging from his belt and tosses a few onto the table. "You're coming with us."

    "Are—" Sonic visibly brightens, only to immediately attempt to hide that he did. "I mean, are you sure? I meant it when I said I can't pay for passage."

    "That's fine," Shadow says as he reties the string of his coin pouch. That done, he takes his flintlock pistol from its holster, thumbs back the hammer, and aims it squarely at Sonic's head. "I'm sure we can find somebody else to pay for you."
