Summary
It's been two, maybe three years since they've last spoken—Nagi can't quite remember. Reo's gotten a bit taller, a bit thinner. He's pierced his ears. Aside from that, he's mostly the same. Maybe happier, actually. He even smiles at Nagi as he approaches, and he waves a hand toward the space at his side, inviting Nagi over to stand in front of the camera with him.
"Nagi, congratulations on the victory today," Reo says jovially, like he hadn't broken Nagi's heart the last time they saw each other. "Any thoughts about Chigiri's winning goal?"
Nagi stares at him. Incredulously, he asks, "You're an interviewer now?"

So maybe he wasn’t in his right mind, but god, who could blame him?
Other alphas could never smell as good, with their thick, domineering scents threatening to overpower him if he so much as stepped close enough. Even omegas, whom Reo was biologically programmed to seek out, always smelt just a tinge too sweet for him, even the ones with scents he could find himself tolerating. And most betas didn’t smell of much at all, their mild scents only serving to tickle his nose when they pressed close enough to him.
One could call Reo picky, but it was the undeniable truth: nothing and no one smelt just right, not to him.
No one but Nagi.
So yes, pre-ruts were the worst, but especially when you were head over heels stupid in love with your best friend.

"Then," Nagi asks, sheepishly tracing circles into the sheets. "How does Reo feel about it?"
"About marriage?" Reo says, incredulous. He laughs, leaning back on his hands to better face Nagi. "Ugh, don't remind me, treasure. I mean— I guess it's bound to happen eventually, or whatever, but I can't stand it."
Nagi feels every cell in his body freeze up. "Eh," he says, too soft to even hear himself. "Is that so…?"
Reo scoffs, and his longer bang comes untucked, spilling out over his face. "Doesn't it sound awful? Being chained to one person like that, for forever? God, I don't think I could do it. I'd be bored to death."
Nagi doesn't say anything. He thinks he should say something. There are words somewhere in him—there must be, there are always words in people, that's what Reo's told him—but they've gone and lodged themselves somewhere behind his ribs, and he can't seem to dig them out. Everything hurts, all of a sudden. He thinks: Reo's words are the cruellest when he means nothing by it.

Nagi sits up. The blankets slip down and pool around his waist. He reaches over, fingers outstretched, and takes Reo's face in his hands. "Reo," he sighs, and it's the fondest Reo's ever heard anyone say his name before. Then, without much warning at all, Nagi leans in and kisses him on the mouth.
Reo's still a little too sleepy, too slow to react. His hands twitch under the covers, but before he gets the chance to react, Nagi's pulling away to press another kiss to his cheek. "Hold on," Reo says. "Wait a second—do we know each other?"
Nagi sits back, just far enough to look Reo in the eyes, wholly unimpressed. "I'm your boyfriend," Nagi tells him, as if it's obvious.
