Keith was seven the first time he heard about soulmates. He thought it was a load of bullshit. Why the hell would someone you've never met want to take away your pain? How could he accept someone only caring about him because they were soulmates? Out of principle, he refused to ever take away his soulmate's pain.
Whoever thought the two would later meet in space and be more than a little pissed off at each other?

Hurts my soul thinking of the pain Lance went through. I can understand Keith's perspective but my God was I just screaming at him to get his shit together. Lot of hard feelings with depression, worth, and self doubt.

Summary
This diplomatic mission is not going the way Lance had hoped. The diplomacy part on behalf of Voltron is going fantastic and Lance doesn’t think he’d be remiss in saying he had a large hand in that. But the whole impress Shiro bit is an epic fail as Shiro doesn’t seem to notice his efforts at all and it’s only worse with Keith showing him up at nearly every turn. The aliens they’re working on the alliance though have noticed his efforts. But as Lance stands here now, Shiro and Keith’s lives along with a vial of poison in his hands, he isn’t so certain that was a good thing.

I think about this way too much with the other thousands of fics I've read circling around Keith, Shiro and Lance. It's a strange but true dynamic that's been created because of the uneven focus for each of the characters on the show. I wished everyone got time with Shiro and that Keith would for once take Lance a little more seriously, ask or wonder why he behaved that way... The monologue really cuts deep.
