    "So…" Lightning sucked in a breath, fiddling with the sleeve of his tracksuit. It might mess everything up, but he had to say it. He had to know. "Does that mean you're staying?"

    Doc's brows furrowed again at this and he looked genuinely confused. "Staying? I'm afraid I don't follow."

    "You know, like, uh, well… Like, you're not quitting?"

    "Quitting? Now, who said anything about quitting? Unless… you want me to…"

     

    During a particularly rough race day, Lightning gets trapped in his own panicked thoughts when he thinks Doc might quit. After all, his second crew chief left under similar circumstances. What’s to stop Doc from doing the same…?

    Shaking his head proved to be a mistake the second he did it and Lightning squeezed his eyes shut against the rising nausea. "Pass."

    "Lightning." Ah... And there was that classic warning tone. "You need a doctor."

    "You're a doctor."

    "Don't you think that if I could do anything about this, I would?“

     

    Suffering from heat exhaustion during a particularly hot race day causes Lightning’s past comes back to haunt him, and the worst part of it is, he can’t figure out why.
