The ceiling gave way with a deafening crack.
She barely had time to react before a hand closed around her arm and yanked her sideways. Concrete exploded where she had been sitting moments before. The impact sent dust and debris through the narrow passage as the entire structure shuddered around them.
For a moment, all she could hear was the roar of her own pulse.
Pointdexter was still holding her, closer than before. His body shielded her from the collapse, one hand firm at her side to keep her upright while fragments of stone continued to rain down around them. Dust hung thick in the air, swallowing the world beyond a few feet.
Ezra became suddenly aware of everything she shouldn't have noticed: the tension in his muscles, the steady grip at her waist, the warmth of his body against her. Only when the tremors finally began to settle did she realize her hand had knotted itself in the fabric of his uniform.
This time, she didn't let go.
The silence between them felt different now. His gaze lingered on her face as the dust slowly settled around them. And for the first time, Ezra found herself unable to look away.
