After losing his wife to cancer, Negan struggled to figure how to move forward without her. "Can you try to be nicer to people? For me," Lucille had made him promise before she'd passed away. "You're going to need people in your life. Your drinking buddies aren't going to be enough."
As much as he wanted to make good on his promise, people just tended to get on his f***ing nerves. Like the piece of work who had moved into the house next door. She'd been a total pill, from the moment he'd met her.
"It just strikes ‘ol Merle here, she ain’t as bad as you make her out to be," his buddy drawled with a grin. "I think she caught the almighty Coach Negan off guard when she refused ta take yer shit from ya, then turned around an' put ya in yer place.”

When she had to finish her home renovation project with a broken ankle, Kat realized she might need some manpower to help with some of the heavier work. Dropping an eight-by-eight piece of lumber on her leg had definitely slowed her down. She hobbled into Deacon's Pub on Main Street on her crutches and hung a piece of eye-catching yellow printer paper with the message, “Room and meals in exchange for labor” on the cork board inside the front door. She added “Pussies Need Not Apply” on Beau Deacon’s prompting, unable to resist his suggestion. Kat definitely wanted someone with a sense of humor to share her space.

Spending his days leading the Saviors and overseeing every tedious aspect of running his community of survivors, Negan finds himself unable to relax when he finally gets a respite late in the evenings. Pacing his room and wandering his compound night after night in lieu of tossing and turning in bed, he discovers the isolated lair of the factory’s newest resident with the gorgeous green eyes.
When she assumes he is one of the Sanctuary's lieutenants, instead of the man in charge, Negan doesn't correct her, wondering if she would still be interested in spending time with him if she knew the man he really was.
