He searched Mike’s face. The other boy blinks back in disbelief before his features settle into an expression Will can’t quite make out. He’s smiling. Smiling knowingly but it’s not warm recognition…it’s almost…Like he’s come to some sort of unpleasant realisation…
“I like you- like you like El likes you!”
“…”
“Mike” the boy tried to reach out his hand out but the target flinched away. Backing up at the mere suggestion of touch. “Mike…”
“I- I know how this goes” the other boy mutters , resigned.
“What….?” How “this goes”
“Cut the crap-!”
“Like you haven’t shown me this- over and over and over-“ each refrain edges closer and closer to a sob “I’m not failing for it.”

Or Mike has been cursed / visited by vecna and when Will confesses his long held crush Mike thinks he’s back in the building being shown another twisted vision. Since Will returning his feelings in Mike’s mind couldn’t be anything but a vision so unknowingly he takes out some pent up thoughts and resentment on an unprepared and very real Will who is only just starting to get over his own feelings is experiencing the emotional equivalent of being hit by a truck.

Two boys who are so different but come to care for each other just when they both thought they weren’t worthy of such respect.
