Alayne woke to the sound of her parents arguing in another room. This was not an uncommon thing to wake her.
For as long as she could recall, Mother and Father had been at one another’s throats in a way that was not too dissimilar from how King Robert and Queen Cersei behaved towards one another, only Father was a gentleman and a true knight, who never raised his hand to his wife in a drunken rage. He did get drunk quite often, though, and Alayne often searched his ruddy face for traces of the handsome young man everyone said he’d once been.
Father was Edmure Tully, Lord of Riverrun, and he had ruled the Riverlands ever since he came of age, when Alayne was two-years-old. She had been born when Father was very young, only thirteen, and Mother sixteen. They had married even younger, when Father was twelve and Mother fifteen.
Truth be told, their marriage had been a great scandal, for while Father was from the finest of families, Mother was the granddaughter of a lowly hedge knight, himself the son of a Braavosi mercenary.

Summary
