He can't help giving her a wider berth than necessary as he walks past the coffee table to the opposing armchair, and if he were less tense he would have hysterics at how he is circling around this truly tiny woman as if she is a physical threat. He sits, posture straight and centered. The therapist sits down as well, and crosses her legs.

"So, are you guys dating?" Nile asks during their lunch break. They are at the Indian buffet, and Nicky is telling Nile about a thrift store he and Joe went to that he thinks she would like. It takes a him a minute to parse the question. "Well, you keep mentioning him and smiling," she adds when he doesn't say anything. "And you haven't been seeing anyone for a while, so I just wondered if that was why."
"No, not at all," Nicky says. "We're friends, and he lives nearby, that's all."

Xie Yun yawns and blinks blearily at his laptop screen. It's really too early in the semester to be up this late, but he and Zhou Fei are far from the only ones in the library, despite it being comfortably past 1:00am. He'd told her again and again that there was no need for her to stay up with him, not when she doesn't have anything due until later this week, but she'd insisted that she enjoys spending time with him. Well. What she actually said was that someone needed to supervise him and keep him from distracting the other students, but that means the same thing coming from Zhou Fei.

Xie Yun insists that he knew they were going to be best friends as soon as she walked into their kindergarten classroom. The door closes quietly behind Xie Yun as he bows low, and Zhou Fei looks up from where she is reading on the bed in her chambers. She is decked in full imperial robes, donned anew for their game this evening rather than kept on since the morning court session, and she skims her gaze idly up and down the flowy robes Xie Yun is wearing.
The draping, gauzy silks in gray and blue land just on the side of casual enough to prevent the court from falling into disarray at the sight of their emperor strolling the halls dressed like the concubine he is playing at for the night. Zhou Fei has left off even the minimal headdress she wears for court, but has otherwise attired herself in the embroidered high-necked robes and fur-trimmed cloak that are her right as empress-consort. Tonight, in this room, she is his empress who commands him, not his empress who rules at his side.

Her hand is a perfect weight where it rests on the back of his head, her thumb sweeping up to meet the bottom of the collar around his throat. The late afternoon light is honey-warm whenever he blinks open his heavy-lidded eyes, the room hazy and dazzling as he floats.

The music swells, a happily tripping melody of strings, and Crowley squares his shoulders towards the stage. Fireplaces need some kind of maintenance, don’t they? Should he miracle it next time he’s in the bookshop, just to be safe? Not that the angel is going start using the fireplace, surely, it would be so bad for the books. Really not Aziraphale’s style. Although, he has been rather unusually perseverant about this whole “holiday spirit” thing this year. So it’s probably safer to miracle away the dust, or the rats, or whatever it is that accumulates in the chimney. Does the bookshop have a chimney?
