When she swings into his office at the Slat through the window, he’s still looking at his ledgers as he rasps, “You’re late.”
“I know,” Inej says simply.
He looks up at her, expecting a good excuse.
She doesn’t really have one for him. “...the Menagerie girls. On the corner of Pauwinsteeg and Leeuwstraat, by the salon,” she gets out in a rush as his eyebrow raises. “I just…I didn’t realize.” She says it like it’s her fault.
