Summary
Kaz’s life hasn’t been easy. After the untimely death of his father, Kaz and his brother Jordie made the journey from their small country town to the bustling city of Ketterdam. Filled with unfounded hope and confidence, the boys were swindled out of their money and left homeless. Tragedy soon struck again when Kaz’s brother succumbed to a plague ripping through the city. Kaz is then forced to fend for himself alone in the harsh, unforgiving streets of Ketterdam. But after spending months on his own, Kaz was taken in by a local Ketterdam gang known as The Dregs. The Dregs promised him love, family, and safety, but it had all been a lie. After years at The Dregs' mercy, Kaz was rescued and sent to live in a southern Kerch town with his new foster father, Colm, and foster brother, Jesper. But Kaz has a long journey ahead of him as he learns to heal from the horrors he’s faced.

“Your foster parent may also expect you to contribute,” the magistrate added, “with chores and tasks around the home. Or outdoors, should you stay on a farm. Nothing more than some light manual labour. But you will be required to take part.”
“You’re telling me I have to work?” Kaz asked, the words laced with contempt. It was less the notion of doing work, and more that of not being paid for said work, that disgusted him. This whole ‘programme’ was starting to feel like an elaborate joke they’d constructed to make a mockery out of him. He was being forced to choose between jail or unpaid labour on what was likely to be a farm—a horrid reminder of the past he knew they were aware of.
Or, Kaz Brekker, aged 15, was involved in a murder. To escape a prison sentence, he has to 'volunteer' to join a fostering programme in the middle of nowhere, and stay out of trouble for an entire year.

“Kaz has an ex?” Jesper asked, sidetracked by this very new information. He turned to Kaz. “You have an ex?” he asked incredulously. Kaz looked between them all - expression unreadable.
“No.”
What was happening? Inej and Wylan both turned to stare at Kaz as if he was lying. Which, well, maybe. Also, Jesper was a little offended.
“Why do they know you have an ex and I didn’t?” he asked, a little petulantly. Kaz kicked him under the table.
“I don’t.”
“Inej?” Jesper asked. She scoffed.
“We’re talking about you, Jesper. Well, you and Kaz,” she said with a wave of her hand. “I don’t think it’s strange you two still spend time together. Though, to Wylan’s point, I can see why it’s a little strange for him given you don’t do this with anyone else you’ve dated as far as I know-”
Or
Inej and Wylan might have maybe, sort of, kind of thought their boyfriends were exes, and debate if it’s weird that they still hang out. Jesper and Kaz are understandably confused.
