    Jayce had been the one to find Viktor the night his partner had taken his self-experimentation too far. It becomes clear that Viktor was willing to sacrifice his humanity for his pursuits. Jayce makes it clear that he refuses to lose any more pieces of his partner.

     

    Jayce was slowly getting better at quiet reassurances. At firm holds on Viktor’s body. At direct commands that left little room for misinterpretation. At physical reminders and affectionate claims that made it difficult for Viktor to ever forget that he was cherished,

    That he belonged here,

    With Jayce.

    It’s too easy for Jayce to forget, sometimes, that Viktor isn’t nice. Viktor’s good. Viktor’s kind. Viktor wants to lift up the weak and the helpless and cast down the mighty. But he isn’t nice. And he’s only human: sometimes, he takes things too far. Sometimes, Jayce wonders if Viktor pictures perfection as a vast white wasteland: sterile, untouched.

    But Jayce isn’t one to criticise. He, too, has his flaws. That night, Jayce pictures Viktor bent over the welding bench and he takes himself in his hand, moving quick and fast and cruel until he comes. Yes: he, too, has his flaws.

    Or: Jayce is down bad, and Viktor slowly notices.

    Виктор не чурается безумных гипотез и сомнительной доказательности источников, строит изящнейшие кристаллические решётки, превосходно управляется с тонкими калибровочными инструментами. Виктор отказывается принять трость в цветах Талисов взамен почившей, предпочитая ей уродливый подержанный огрызок с навершием в виде рыбьей головы. Виктор ничем не выдаёт статуса, на предмет которого Джейс без конца строит теории, хотя со статистической точки зрения в том нет нужды: задача решается методом перебора.

    Виктор продолжает скармливать ему невероятные истории о своём происхождении и успевает побыть внебрачным сыном разорившегося кем-барона; потомком икстальских кочевников, прибывших к этим берегам, когда Нижний город ещё не провалился в тартарары, утратив выход к морю, торговые привилегии, землю, воду, воздух; и наконец — находит относительно логичное объяснение наличию у себя вастайских генов, якобы доставшихся от пятиюродной тётки-полукровки.

    Или: что Джейс Талис узнал о Викторе N (дело в том, что он из Зауна, с фамилиями там творится какая-то нелепица) за четыре сумбурных года, что проглядел и чего вовремя не почуял.

    What Jayce first ascribed to suppressants (and sheer willpower) was actually the byproduct of a serious medical condition. Viktor hasn't had a heat since he was a teenager. Every year Viktor’s hypothalamus tested the dry well of his fuel reserves and elected to divert any runoff from ovulation to more vital bodily functions (say, breathing).

    Worse: It’s common knowledge that heats and ruts are strongest at their outset. Hormones fluctuate over the years; cycles settle; the body calibrates to accommodate the unruly roommate of ovulation. But Viktor’s body doesn’t have the benefit of practice. Somehow—against every natural law—Viktor, about a side glance from death and as far as a decade from his last heat, is about to nosedive into an induction furnace.

    When the temporary energy boost from his first Shimmer experiment triggers a heat, Viktor resolves to suffer the consequences alone. Needless to say, things don't go as planned.
