You are a miracle of nature, his mother said to him once, cupping a fever bright cheek. Your own body fights against your existence, and yet here you are.
He remembers her words when his head pounds and orange tinted blood congeals over his lips. When the earth sways beneath his feet and his chest tightens with the lack of air. Once, the memory had brought him comfort. Now he wonders if perhaps she was wrong. That he wasn't a miracle, but a curse, an abomination. A mess of random otherworldly attributes sewn up in hardly human skin. After all, here he is, barely an adolescent, and already unraveling at the seams; his ancestors had once lived for centuries. He wonders if he'll even reach adulthood.

He should have told someone about his mother’s lipstick on the pristine white of Daemon Targaryen’s shirt — or about how she had been getting ready to meet him in the foyer of the fencing school. Jace berated himself for staying silent because he had no doubt of who his mother had met — and it was his fault that it had come to this.
Jace looked at his mother, wondering if she would tell at least him the truth. Luke was too clueless, and perhaps it was for the best that he did not know just yet, but she could not ignore her oldest son. He felt like an accomplice because he had seen them — not quite together but not really apart.
