Summary
“Spider’s sort of an unusual nickname for a girl, isn’t it?” River asks her a week into training. They share a few seminars, so she’s seen him around, and of course she’s heard of him — he’s a Cartwright; everyone has heard of him by now — but it’s the first time he’s spoken to her.
She looks up at him from her seat with a sharp smile. She’s not offended, but she wants him to know she isn’t a sure thing, even with his important last name and annoying good looks.
“Isn’t your name River, or am I thinking of someone else who’s hardly in a place to judge about unusual names?”

Summary
Having apparently finally finished whatever thing he was probably only pretending to be busy with to make River wait, Spider finally looks at him. “So sorry if you were intending this to be a surprise. Melody at the front desk sent me a message as soon as you arrived,” he says smugly.
River shrugs, hoping Spider can’t tell that he is, in fact, a bit disappointed. He’d been looking forward to catching Spider unaware, though not really for any particular reason other than to annoy him. He doesn’t really have any particular reason for being here at all, but sitting around Slough House had felt even more stifling than usual after having been out in the field recently, and Spider’s usually good for getting River’s blood pumping a bit, if nothing else.
Spider doesn't die. River pays him a visit.

Summary
Her meeting with Taverner isn’t for another forty-seven minutes, but she tells River he needs to leave soon anyway.
“Is it, you know, a sex thing?” he asks when Webb's tugging her dress back down and smoothing out her hair.
She doesn’t do him the disservice of pretending not to know what he’s referring to. She doesn’t do him the courtesy of a direct answer.
“She’s not fucking me, if that’s what you’re asking,” she says primly.
They both know it’s not.
Taverner plays with Webb. River loses.
