Summary
Newt studies his face like this again, Hermann’s eyelashes full and bursting with warm color from the world around them, and they pierce right through Newt’s weak heart. He pushes on anyway, voice soft, “You don’t let anyone else call you Hermann, Hermann, but you let me do that. Why won’t you let me take off a couple extra letters, huh?” He nudges Hermann playfully with his elbow, as they’re side by side. Newt’s jacket squishes between them.
He watches as Hermann lets a very, very brief smile slip. “I still don’t want you calling me that. It’s— juvenile. It’s horrible.”
“Maybe you’d have a bit more fun if you let nicknames into your life, Hermann. They’re fun. Hermann,” Newt inches closer, their elbows touching, poking his nose up to try and actually see Hermann’s face, “Herm. Herms. Hermie.” Hermann eyes him sideways, apparently deeming turning his head to look at Newt properly too much work. “… Hermit crab?” Newt offers, and Hermann finally snorts a laugh. Newt shines with great triumph.
