Summary
Moving in with JJ Maybank was never part of the plan. She was supposed to be independent by now, in college working toward a degree in environmental engineering, maybe somewhere in California, or even Hawaii. But she’s not. She’s still stuck on Kildare, working at the Wreck and daydreaming about a life beyond the Outer Banks. She can’t pinpoint exactly where she went wrong, where The Plan failed and she fucked up enough to land here, in a shitty fishing shack on the marsh with a guy named Jesse fucking James, paying rent to Sarah Cameron’s boyfriend and still working at her parent’s restaurant, nearly two years out of high school with no future and no plan for one.

Summary
As always, life had a way of throwing unexpected surprises toward Will; whether it be improvements or outright cruel things that made his life much worse than it had to be.
And for Will, he doesn't really know when life became worse— can't remember when it all started. As a matter of fact, he can't really remember much of anything, just that his life had become an unhinged mess of chaos that had gotten out of control; out of HIS control.
Now, there are suddenly two eighteen year old boys in the middle of his chaos. Great, just great.

Will had never really talked about his time in the Upside Down before. Dustin had tried asking, once, but fortunately, Mike had shut it down before Will had even gotten the chance to refuse. It was a relief, at the time, to deny those awful memories the opportunity to come to light. There was a finality to it-like admitting what had happened to him would make it real.
"I also hid," Will said. "For a long time."
"In a memory?" Lucas asks cautiously.
Will starts to shake his head no, then tilts his head. "Sort of. Not really. In Castle Byers."
