    Summary

It was a Friday when the video dropped.

“What is happening?” He asked St Simon, who was holding his phone tight to his chest, his expression odd. “Someone has died?”

Across the room he could see Marlow moving slowly upright from where he had been doing floor stretches, his phone in his hand as well, his face pinched.

    “It’s Hollander,” St Simon said.

The bottom of Ilya’s stomach fell out, closely followed by the rest of Ilya’s organs. His chest hurt so acutely that he thought he must be having a heart attack.

“Not dead,” St Simon added quickly, reaching out to grab Ilya’s shoulder when Ilya’s knees actually buckled. “Jesus, sorry. I should have - no it’s just -”

“Someone tell me what the fuck is going on,” Ilya snapped, “and everyone else shut up.”

Marlow reached him now, held his phone out to Ilya, open already to an article with a headline huge enough Ilya could easily make out the HOLLANDER blaring out of it even before his eyes focused and he took the phone from Marlow.

A video is posted online, for Shane it feels like a death sentence. For some parts of him, it is.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Qualified by the highest honor of randomly remembering a scene, tracking it down and still loving it.

The way shane asks for ilya to come and ilya is just there right away...all the ways ilya is there for shane, calming him, speaking for him, holding him, seeing him, snapping him out of his spirals with left field comments.. perfection ❤️

It's a hard read because it's a good read, even after the comfort kicks in, but so worth it for the absolute love and support (also marlin and pike bromance)

    Summary

“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.

Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.

“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.

Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.

They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

A little kitschy, a little heavy on the Romantics of it all, but sometimes capital R Romance in Paris is what's needed.
Maybe I'm just hard on the City of Love vibe, because my version of Paris is a lot grimier and 20e rather than 16e or whatever western arrondissement the flats in

    Summary

Ilya smiled down at Shane and his eyes gleamed with mischief.

"You know, Troy is just a few doors down. We could call him over, make it a little party."

Shane's eyes snapped open only to narrow again as he glared up at Ilya.

    “Would you like that?”

    “No, I wouldn’t,” Shane snarled.

But his face was screwed up in frustrated pleasure. Ilya hummed thoughtfully and pretended to consider.

“Perhaps we could make it a competition then.”

Shane made an irritated noise and turned his face away. Ilya leaned closer and let his teeth drag down the length of Shane's clenched jaw.

"You want Troy to see how well you take it, or do you want to see if he's better at riding my cock than you are?"

He had been teasing him, pushing at the jealousy that usually made Shane squirm and glare and tell him to shut the fuck up while his traitorous cock twitched and throbbed at how much he secretly liked it.

So when Shane did squirm away from him, Ilya followed automatically, pressing their chests flush together. He thought Shane was playing.

“Get the fuck off me,” Shane spat.

Shane safewords out of Ilya's teasing about Troy.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is a rare beast in fanfiction land that neither glosses over nor wildly exaggerates the edges of these characters. It doesn't give free passes, but it also doesn't demonize to the point of no return. Ilya is allowed to be shitty, have his eyes opened to it and learn to do better.

I'm not sure if I agree with the level of aggravation in the tags/notes (but maybe that's because I skip most of the *discourse*), I do agree that yuna while being a loving mother wouldn't always be an understanding/patient one and also that ilya brushing off his father's influence so completly might be verlockend but not realistic.

All in all a measured and ultimately no less loving take of the guys finally communicating

    Summary

Shane Hollander is one of the best search and rescue specialists in North America. He doesn't do private clients. He doesn't do rich adrenaline junkies with camera crews and a death wish. He does, apparently, do forty thousand dollars when his parents need it badly enough. One week on Karanov's summit should be simple. Assess the snowpack, make the call, go home. Then the storm rolls in, the helicopter can't fly, and Shane is stuck in an eleven by nine foot ranger station with Ilya Rozanov — Olympic gold medalist, professional daredevil, and the most infuriating man Shane has ever met.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is one of the most beautiful fics I've read in a long time, there's so much love in this, for the characters, for their respective craft, for the mountain itself.
It's so quiet and kind and treats everything and everyone with so much respect. I want to wrap myself in this fic like a warm blanket and never leave the mountain

    Summary

It’s the most famous cold case in hockey history. Up-and-coming Russian phenom Ilya Rozanov mysteriously vanishes the summer before his rookie season. Despite extensive police work, no trace of the young superstar is ever found.

Shane Hollander remembers Ilya Rozanov. Better than most. And now, several years retired and with two highly successful hockey biographies under his belt, he’s taking a crack at the mystery that’s haunted his own career with strings of what-ifs and memories revisited so often they’ve softened like old cotton.

Perhaps now, with the long eye of perspective between him and those memories, he can unravel the short lifetime of the man poised to become his biggest rival and best kept secret. Travelling to Russia he searches for stories and the answers they hold.

If only this damn dog that’s apparently a local cryptid would stop raiding his trash cans.

It has wandered this place for years. It knows every stream, every hill, every tree. Every pale, flat face in the place of straight lines. It does not know this face.

But it remembers dark eyes and star-dots across the cheeks.
It cannot remember its own name.

    But it remembers him.

    Bookmarker's Notes

I'm in awe...going in I expected a silly little romp, not this beautiful exploration of character motivation, longing and belonging and being at once held and trapped by the places you give yourself to.
Losing yourself as a way for your mind (or the magical forest you endeared yourself to) to protect you from what you can't bare to face hits so close to home as someone who's coping strategies sometimes tend towards hiding rather than healing.

You built this really fleshed out little world with so much tenderness and compassion. All these folklore elements mesh so well with the very human inner lives and relationships.
Also you really pulled off the whole narrative framework of documentary research and interviews as vehicles for pacing and character development.
