Summary
“Charles?” The boy asked, startling him from his thoughts. His voice was soft and kind, like his mum’s often was after a particularly rough night with his dad.
Charles looked up, his good eye blinking owlishly. “Who’re you?”
He looked back at Charles, lips set in a wobbly frown. If Charles had to guess, he’d say the strange, stuffy-looking boy was trying not to cry.
There was a long beat of silence. And then:
“Oh, my dear. What has she done to you?”

Edwin learns about Charles’s childhood in steps, as Charles finds his way back to the family he’s built by working through the trauma of his past.Series

Summary
Edwin sighed and unfolded his hands to push his hair back. “I suppose this was inevitable,” he allowed.
Charles beamed. “That’s the spirit. Look at it this way — you’ve never been to a house party before, and here’s one that’s right up your alley!”
“Ominous and full of peril?” Edwin asked sardonically.
“Exactly!” Charles agreed. “This way you get to go to a party you’ll actually like, because it’s actually a mystery. And once you solve the mystery, the party ends. I couldn’t have thrown you a better one myself.”Series

Summary
Charles tried to pay attention, because Edwin was really upset, and Charles still didn’t understand why, and it seemed like this might be important. It was just, they’d been at this for a while, and Edwin kept asking him the same questions and not leaving him time to answer, so. His mind may have wandered a bit to how he would reinforce the next cricket bat.
His attention snapped back to the present when Edwin said, “This can’t happen. You can’t risk this, I can’t be the reason you risk it. You have to move on.”
“Move on?” Charles repeated blankly. “Move on from what?”
“From here, Charles!” Edwin shouted, suddenly furious again, suddenly shouting even though his eyes were filled with tears. “You have to go with Death! You have to leave!”
“I don’t want to go with Her,” Charles said, nonplussed.
“Fine, that’s your business, but you can’t keep hanging around me!” Edwin snapped.
Charles’ world suddenly tilted on its axis, sending everything askew. “I can’t?” he asked, his voice small, his heart wide open and exposed.Series
