Glokta had believed he had thought it through when he knocked on Ardee's door with that ridiculous stone in his pocket. How, then, had he not foreseen that masquerading as a father would entail having to interact with a child?
“You take her,” Ardee said. “I sleep.”
His eyelid twitched. “Me?”
“Yes, you. Who else? Barnam?”
“But —”
“'It must be our child'? 'Now and forever'? Whose words were those?”
“I cannot carry a child around,” Glokta said, gesturing to the cane that leaned against his desk.
“Then sit,” Ardee said and pointed her free hand to the rocking chair by the fire.
They held each other’s gaze for a long moment. His eyes dropped to her trembling legs. He sucked at his empty gums.
“Fine,” he spat.
He laboured to his feet, leaning first on the desk and then on his cane, wincing and taking his time, making sure to let her see how reluctant he was to cooperate. She watched silently as he shuffled towards the fire, a pained grimace on his face, and sat down.
