“Ortez,” he responds. Thoughtless. No hesitation. The boy cocks his head to the side. Recording.
“First name?”
Even though he knows he has to fight it, he doesn’t. For the life of him, he can’t figure out why he doesn’t fight it.
“Samuel.”
The boy nods solemnly, and Sam feels a little like he just sold his soul.
“Sam Ortez,” the boy says, like he can taste it.
He crosses the linoleum to Sam’s bedside. Holds out his hand.
“Isaac Gates.”Boys becoming soldiers. Soldiers becoming monsters. Monsters becoming human. An origin story and an epilogue, from 2541 to 2559.

But Isaac will be damned if he can’t go out shooting, in an explosion. He’ll be damned if he dies by rotting in silence or god forbid, some kind of peace. He hates the thought of it—silence, surrounded by loved ones whose eyes fill with tears and regret, wishing him well, safe travels across the river. When he dies, Isaac knows he’ll die alone. He prefers it like that.
