Summary
After the accident that ended Sonic's racing career, people insisted that he should be thankful to be alive. Unfortunately, while that may be true, he's also very bored and, quite frankly, starting to feel like a burden: Tails makes enough money for them at his repair shop, but Sonic can see the toll it's taking on his brother. So when a mysterious benefactor offers him a chance to race again, Sonic eagerly accepts, becoming Eggman Industries' unofficial spokesman, the Phantom Rider.
However, when a new driver called the Dark Rider arrives on the scene, Sonic finds that his contract with Eggman Industries comes with strings attached. At the same time, his brother hires a new shop assistant, the mysterious and enigmatic Shadow, who instantly captures Sonic's interest. Torn between his morals, his love of racing, and his desire for Shadow's attention, Sonic will have to decide whether being the Phantom Rider really is worth it.

“Shit,” Shadow stumbled back, clutching the wound in his side.
“Woah!” Sonic skidded to a stop next to him, his brows immediately furrowing in concern. “Dude, did you just get shot?!”
Shadow hissed in pain, already feeling the blood start to soak into his gloves. It was a rookie mistake, he was skilled enough to evade that bullet, but it was aimed right at Sonic and the stupid hero didn’t even notice. It was an impulsive decision, Shadow should’ve just let that idiot get shot.

It's Christmas day.
An event he typically spends with his closest friends. Though, the extreme weather and nature of the season has trapped him in his apartment with a grumpy boyfriend who is SO not a morning person, a bat with a propensity for teasing and an adoration of shiny things, and a robot who doesn't particularly care but is a nice addition given that his space heater gave out a week ago...
...It's not ideal but he's glad to spend Christmas with the people he cares about and he wouldn't have it any other way.
