Simon is quiet again for a bit. Grace wishes that he could leave, go to his own bed, crawl under the covers. He doesn’t really want to unpack this right now. But he knows that Simon won't let him run from it. “It was being held down, wasn’t it?”
Grace nods, determinedly ignoring the lump forming again in his throat. “I think so,” he says miserably. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know that would happen.”
“Don’t apologize,” Simon says again. “I’m not upset.”
Weirdly, that does ease the tension in Grace’s chest a bit. He hadn’t really thought that Simon would be angry that he’d ruined the moment, but it’s reassuring to hear it from him anyway. “It was just… the specific way. The way you…” He tries to rephrase. He really doesn’t want to sound accusatory. “Being face down. Held down like that. I haven’t felt that since…”
Grace finds out the hard way that he hasn't processed his trauma at all. Simon is the safe place he needs to begin to heal.

Summary
The only reason he wasn’t certain he was dead was that he couldn’t imagine being in a coma in the afterlife. Hell was supposed to be endless suffering, and this wasn’t anywhere close to that. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was lightyears better than joining the fallen in the blood ocean. He wasn’t entirely sure what he thought about Heaven, especially with what he’d done for the promise of it after death. Simon hadn’t earned Heaven by anyone’s metric. Even if he had, the issue of his waning consciousness was still a deciding factor. Purgatory would be the closest to what he was experiencing. Except. How could he earn his forgiveness if he couldn’t even open his eyes?
It felt dangerous to call himself alive, even if it was in the caverns of his own mind.

Summary
It was a miracle that the man was alive, but every Eridian he asked confirmed that there was still a heartbeat in the stranger’s chest. It would take another miracle for him to wake up. The impenetrable sleep made treatment easier. However, Grace couldn’t shake his distrust in any kind of coma after condemning his crew to the stars. The longer he was unconscious, the less likely it was that he ever woke up again.
