Summary
“I don’t usually do this,” he said. “The personal appearance thing. But you asked a question on the way down—not out loud, but you know. I heard it. And it was a good question, so.” He spread his hands. “Here I am.”
I tried to remember what I’d been thinking as I fell. The last few seconds before the impact were smeared, impressionistic. I remembered the clementines scattering. I remembered the sky.
“The meaning of life,” God said, reading my confusion. “That was your question. You asked what the point of all this was.”
“Oh,” I said. “I did?”
“You did. And I’m going to answer it.”
He leaned forward slightly. For a moment, despite the polo shirt and the receding hairline and the general aura of middle management, I saw something vast behind his eyes—galaxies collapsing, species blinking in and out, the whole slow burn of entropy rendered in miniature.
“But first,” he said, “a little context. How much do you know about Air Bud?”

Jesse McCree is an occasionally leather-clad NPS ranger whose duties extend somewhat further than shooing lost tourists back onto the clearly marked hiking trails. Something weird is going on in the desert south of Santa Fe and their lives unexpectedly come together in the middle of it.
