Summary
The setting is a dance put on by the rehabilitation hospital. It is a way to help patients come out of their shells. It's a way to mix with each other and interact with people who are not patients. It’s anticipated by many and dreaded by more. Scars will be shown; missing limbs will be accented as will limps and arms and that don’t work.
It takes weeks of preparation by therapists – sometimes months. The psychologists work overtime building confidence and doing roleplay to prepare for introductions. There are musicians who volunteer to wrangle and a playlist to be decided upon.
It happens twice a year mid-summer and at Christmas. Some patients have been there long enough to have gone to several. Some have been here and refused to go. But at some point, healing has to outgrow shame, and they attend in spite of their reluctance.

It's been seven years since Barba walked away from being an ADA and Olivia Benson. He skied a lot, gained weight, lost weight and settled comfortably into middle age working for a reputable firm on a partner track with a corner office. Life wasn't interesting but it was good. He could afford to buy Mami that condo in Little Havana where she was surrounded by family and friends. He could pick and choose his cases, so there were no more Richard Wheatleys - just rich men who did stupid things.
Being pressed into service to go to an awards banquet pissed him off but being on the partner track requires a certain amount of sucking up, so he went. He expected to eat bad food, drink cheap scotch and be bored out of his skull. He never expected that he would become a hero.

Nacho had a theory. It was just that, a theory. And while he’d yet to find concrete evidence to confirm said theory, he had also not found any indications that he was wrong. Therefore, the theory remained: the Calderóns were all vampires.
