“What’s our plan for the Hunters?” asks Baby. He rose from the couch, Mystery not far behind, and stands in front of him. Romance and Abby take their places in line next, and Jinu lets out a breath. This is right. This is familiar; everyone in formation.
“Plan? We sing, better than them. In direct competition they can’t beat us.”
He was banking on the opposite. One missed cue, an off note… anything less than perfection would fail the demons in the International Idol Awards. Rumi, Huntrix… they would never misstep.

Summary
Jinu can’t leave without Gwi-Ma’s permission, but sometimes he stands under the open and roiling sky and watches the barrier cascade in musical waves overhead, thousands of glimmering blue filaments that undulate with deceptive delicacy, offering, if even for a second, a glimpse of an overworld that rouses itself to song. It is not lost on Jinu that he serves a warped inverse of that purpose down here.
But demons don’t flock to his music. They shy away from it, wilting rather than blooming, because on a very literal level they understand that his voice isn’t for them. Gwi-Ma is a jealous god, and he cannot abide it if the rewards that his gifts reap don’t return to him, always, in the end.
Or: In which Jinu makes choices (a real mixed bag of them), trips into a situationship, regrets everything, lies to himself and others, and decides he wants to be a better person after all, actually—not necessarily in that order.

Cal nods. “I want to go back to Bracca. Ok, well, want is a strong word…”

They’ve traversed the meandering pathways under Nur’s dark oceans and evaded the Inquisition yet again, but they’re far from out of danger, and a long way from reconnecting with the Mantis. All they’ve got is a stolen ship with a broken navigational computer and there’s only one place in the galaxy they might find a replacement.
There’s just one other problem: Cal is dying. He’s been dying from the start.
Cal just really, really doesn't want to die on Bracca.
