Summary
Middleton is suffocating under an endless drought. When the spiritual lake turns pitch black, the village reaches back into its darkest history to revive an ancient tradition: a husband must be offered to the Water Goddess in exchange for rain.
Ron Stoppable, the baker's son, single, unloved, and entirely overlooked, didn't exactly get a vote in the matter.
Cast into the lightless depths and shackled as an unwilling offering, he finds himself in the sunken palace of a red-headed goddess. With eyes like cold emeralds, she looks at him as if he were a mere insect, when she deigns to look at him at all.
Ron has nothing to prove and everything to lose. The Goddess wants for nothing and expects even less. But in the silence of her drowned halls, she begins to notice something in her "husband" that she doesn't yet have a name for.Bookmarked by Ellogoverner
