Robert kept reaching with his left. To catch when he scraped crumbs off the coffee table, to turn the kitchen faucet when the water was a little too hot, to grab the other shoulder of his shirt and fold it with the military precision his father had trained into him from a young age; quickly, while they were warm, so you didn’t have to iron.
Crumbs hit the floor, water burned his hand, the shirt hung from a single fist, wrinkling with every passing second.He used to always sleep without a shirt, but seeing the stub, or nub, or whatever he was supposed to call it - seeing it, the deep scar left from the amputation carving its way around the bottom and then up slightly. It fucked with him in a way he hadn’t ever considered.
