Summary
“You look like—” Carol's voice broke from no use. “You look like someone who isn’t real.”
“It was the most efficient way to—”
“Stop,” Carol snapped. The woman—they—stopped. It was the first time since Helen’s body went cold she'd said stop and the world had listened. “You’re not allowed to use my—” She gestured uselessly at the woman’s face. “You can't puppet this poor woman around to show up here like a goddamn consolation prize.”
The woman took a small step closer. “We only want to help.”Or,

Summary
Zosia moves very well on court, and her slide on the clay is divine. Carol is kind of envious about it. She hits the ball hard and flat. After every stroke, she makes the racket sound heavenly, and with every stroke she grunts, and she grunts loudly. Carol’s eyes open wide at her discovery, and a warmth rises and settles in the lower part of her body that vibrates every time she hears Zosia’s grunts.
Must be the alcohol, yep. There’s not way—
Another grunt.
“Oh god” Carol says
She should, to the very least, dislike Zosia. She’s young, she’s healthy and she’s incredibly talented. She should hate her, because she’s standing in the way of Carol winning another Slam again.
Another grunt.
“Ah fuck it” Carol says as she brings her hand down her shorts and rubs her clit. She closes her eyes, and can still feel Zosia’s touch on her shoulder. She’s already wet—

Summary
There was a cardboard box sitting on her office chair when she arrived. A yellow Post-It was stuck to the top, bearing the words “help yourself” in sloppy handwriting that Carol immediately recognized. She knew what she would find inside, but she opened the box anyway. Sure enough—it was a collection of business casual attire, clearly pre-owned but seemingly devoid of holes and stains.
Helen Umstead can go fuck herself, Carol thought.

Summary
Carol misses those nights when she took silence and sleep for granted. It’s been two weeks since they have stopped, and the repercussions are starting to show in the sluggish way she moves about in the morning. In the headaches that remind her of the worst kind of hangover. And in the irritation she feels at the slightest inconvenience, or even at her lack of inspiration when she sits in front of a blank document on her computer.
Well, maybe that last part isn’t entirely someone else’s fault. But still, she should do something about the fucking noise.
[...]
“Well, then? Do you need something?”
Carol takes a deep breath. For the first time since moving in this awfully sleazy apartment complex, she’s about to be the wet blanket everybody hates – or maybe appreciates for the intervention, she hopes.
“Yeah,” she mutters and points to the door. “Could you turn it down? I – I’m trying to get some sleep.”
The other seems to ponder her request for a second before shrugging. “It’s not that loud.”or
a new tenant moves in the upstairs apartment. She's loud, careless, annoying. And hot. And Carol has a hard time dealing with that.
