She does feel cared for, with Philip. He’s harsh and unrelenting. He uncovers all her secrets and weaknesses with breathtaking ease. He doesn’t hesitate in using strength against her, or his peculiar insight into her mind. She hates him for it, when he makes her give up truths that she’s kept secret for so long. But then he’s tender, too. He holds her after her nightmares and never tells her to stop crying. He kisses her as though he never wants to stop. He lets her steal his shirt for a nightdress, and remembers that she likes sugar in her tea but not her coffee.
And he takes her dancing when she’s in danger of losing control and letting out the twisted, ugly thing that lurks behind her teeth and beneath her skin.

“I got pulled into a job,” Philip says. “Sort of dragged in, you might say.” He pauses, and she hears something on the other end of the line, someone else speaking. “Sure,” Philip says to whoever it is. “Listen, Vera, I’ll be fine, so don’t worry about me. But I took a couple of hits, and I can’t drive the car tonight. And I don’t want the neighbours to see me coming home covered in blood.”
Vera inhales. “I beg your pardon,” she says sharply.

“Enough, now,” he says. There’s enough of an edge to his voice to make it an unmistakeable command. “Tell me what’s wrong. It’s not just a long day and a snowstorm, so don’t pretend it is.”
“I’m not going to pretend,” Vera snaps. But he’s got a right to be suspicious, she knows. She can’t blame him for it. He knows her too well, he knows how easily she lies. How second nature it is for her to lie and deceive and make those around her believe. “I’m not going to pretend,” she repeats, softer this time. “Just…” She can’t continue. She can’t admit that this is hard for her. Philip knows without being told, and she won’t admit it out loud. She wants him to look at her with that warm, approving expression, but her heart is warring with her head and all her instincts scream that she should hide away all her weaknesses, always. Even with Philip. Perhaps especially with Philip.

Sometimes she wonders if she would feel more regret if Hugo had not married her, if he had suspected her in any way. She does not think so, but there is no way of knowing now. Well, there is one way, but she would rather not tell Hugo.

“It hurts,” she snaps. “Stop it!”
“For God’s sake, Vera.” He drops the comb, and it lands in the water with barely a splash. “I’m doing the best I can,” he tells her. His voice is as sharp as hers, all raw edges and impatience, and on any other occasion she would appreciate that he’s working up a fine temper of his own. But now, though she can recognise it, she doesn’t care. She’s too frustrated, too wound up by her body’s frailties, to care that she might be poking a tiger. “Do you want me to do this, or not?”
“Not if you can’t do it without hurting me,” she spits out. “As if I’m not sore enough already!”
