If Ellie was anything other than nervous to the point of shitting her pants, she might laugh at the way Joel’s entire expression slackens with shock. To his credit, he recovers quickly, and folds his arms across his chest, leaning some of his weight against the rail. It’s such a Joel stance that Ellie finds herself mapping out how she would sketch it, tracing the details of him with her eyes.
“Well that depends. What movie are we watchin?’”
At that, a real smile splits Ellie’s face. “Curtis and Viper II.”

Summary
Dina had poured so much of her energy into worrying, mourning, and healing. She had spent well over half a year dealing with abandonment, and the other half accepting the death of the woman who now stood across from her. Her prayers were answered, but far too late. She breathed out, hard, and just as Ellie opened her mouth to speak, Dina slammed the door closed, unable to face the very moment she once dreamed of.

Ellie makes her way back to Jackson after Santa Barbara. She goes back to Dina, who learns to forgive her.
