Paige leaned against the counter, stealing a quick kiss to the corner of Azzi’s mouth. “You’re quiet. Everything okay?”
Azzi poured two mugs and slid one toward Paige. “Laundry day was yesterday.”
Paige blinked. “Was it?”
“Yes.” Azzi’s voice stayed calm, but there was an edge under it. “It was your turn. I reminded you Thursday. And yesterday morning. And last night before I went to sleep when you were stuck on your iPad.”

Summary
The first time Paige ever saw Azzi Fudd, the Dallas Wings were 6 minutes into the second quarter.
It was a testament to the intensity and importance of the game—away against the Storm, halfway through the season and crucial in the fight to stay within the top 8–that it takes Paige almost until halftime to even notice her. She is sitting courtside, wearing a white jacket, unbuttoned, over a black tank top and a pair of blue jeans. But what Paige mostly notices, as she inbounds the ball, are her heavily lidded eyes, gazing up at Paige for a split moment, as if scanning her for some secret she didn’t even know she was keeping.

They wrote the rules early, before the season tipped off, sitting on the floor of Paige’s living room with a pizza box between them.
Azzi would keep the team-issued apartment across the complex. No consecutive sleepovers if they could help it. Once the bedroom door closed, basketball stayed outside. Every Sunday after church they would go on a real date, somewhere fancy and with real wine. And no PDA in front of the team or the cameras. Boundaries needed so the relationship wouldn’t swallow the work, and the work wouldn’t swallow everything else.
For most of the year the rules held.
Then All-Star weekend ended and something in Azzi broke.
