“Officer. Does this look like an orphanage?”
“Special circumstances. This one needs to disappear.” Marcus, as usual, was humorless. He placed a bag of coins on the desk in front of the Warden. The giant weighed the bag in one hand thoughtfully, then looked down to inspect his new inmate. She was obviously young, maybe 15 or 16, filthy, covered in bruises and smeared with blood, which flowed freely from her nose. Clearly, she’d had a rough night. Years ago, he might have had a moment of compassion for the child, but this place had eroded his humanity.
“Disappearing prisoners go to Cell 12, Level 40.” He handed over a ring of keys.
“No records,” stated Marcus, and pushed Vi toward the mechanical lift.

Vi spends 7 years in Stillwater Prison, where unexpected friendship gives her the strength to hold on to herself while she dreams of reuniting with her sister. An imagining of Vi's time in Stillwater, based on the premise that it wasn't all beatings and solitary, that something else had to have happened, something good, in order for her to become the character we know and love. Not torture porn. Brief descriptions of violence, some implied sex, but not explicit.

"Vi has... she has amnesia, Father! She won't provide anything to them. She's stuck in a mindset of the past!" Caitlyn exclaimed angrily. She sighed shaking her head. "I should be the one in that bed, not her."
"Caitlyn," Her father said gently. "This was not your fault."
"I could've prevented this!"
"What happened, had already happened, Caitlyn." He whispered holding her face. "Right now, you need to recover and be ready to leave. You and Vi will be taken to a place to lay low for a time. Think of it as a long and well-earned vacation."
Caitlyn took his hand feeling tears leak from of her eyes. "I feel so useless."

Caitlyn Kiramman and Violet Darrow are one of the best squads in the Zaun Police Force. When a chase and an altercation led to Vi gaining amnesia, the duo must be sent into witness protection. Caitlyn struggles with trying to help her partner heal from her accident. How can she help her when Vi couldn't remember who Caitlyn was or even the fact they were more than just partners in uniform.

Caitlyn, pen in hand, freezes in her seat.
“Excuse me?”
“I want to get snakebites,” Vi repeats, now firmer.
If there were gears inside Caitlyn's head, they would be turning right now. Any moment now, smoke will start coming out of her ears with how hard she's frowning.
“You…want to get bitten by a snake?”
Sometimes you spot a piercing shop on your way to have breakfast with your girlfriend and it leads to the realization that you've been wanting things your whole life. The rest comes slowly.
