They could be your neighbour, or living in a distant country. The only thing you know is when they get hurt, because then you feel their pain. Just for a brief moment. Barely enough for you to notice, unless it is a serious injury. So, most people with a soul-partner soon learn to live with it and go about their days like regular people.
    They just pray their soul-partner will not die before them.
