“Now kneel on one knee.”
Flins raises an eyebrow, but obediently lowers himself to one knee before the wheelchair, looking up at Illuga.
Illuga solemnly (though with a slight tremor in his voice) places a hand on his shoulder.
“From now on, you are my knight. You will protect me from boredom and stairs.”
Flins takes his thin palm and kisses his knuckles — lightly, almost jokingly, but with real gallantry.
“I swear to serve you faithfully… young master.”
Illuga had resigned himself to the fact that his world ended at the threshold of his home. A wheelchair, countless books, and chronic melancholy — that was his entire life.
Until his father brought Flins into their house.
Calm, honest, without pity in his eyes, Flins becomes his knight and leads him to the penguins, to the sea, to the jellyfish… and to himself.
And for the first time in many years, Illuga learns to smile again. And then — to love.
