    {After killing Mal and the Darkling on the Fold, and losing her power all in one fell sweep, Alina has lost all she can bear. She returns to Os Alta to serve her people as their tsaritsa alongside Nikolai, her demon king.

    When an opportunity presents itself to rid Nikolai of his demon, Alina cannot help but pursue it, despite the possible consequences of what or who it might raise.}

     

    This is a canon-divergent fic where Mal stays dead on the Fold and Alina decides to marry Nikolai. It is primarily a Darklina fic, but I have a lot of love for Nikolai as a character and I think I honor that in this story. There are also some elements from the King of Scars duology here which if you have read you will likely pick up on, but if you have not it is definitely not a prerequisite for this fic. This is set in the book!verse.

    She will have one chance to do this. One chance to escape him, to earn more time to figure out how to defeat him. “You’ve shown me your hand,” she says, her core heating as she goes so bright that the tent’s occupants hit the ground to hide from it. The Darkling doesn’t, but she’s caught him unawares. His shadows are wild, uncontained as they attempt to thread through her light, to get to her. He’s scrambling. “Now I will show you mine.”

    Then she sends a quick prayer to whoever is listening, brightens her light to the point where she can only hold it a few seconds without harming anyone, and bends it away. She only has a moment to throw herself into the crowd of Grisha on the floor, masking herself in the frantic heartbeats, before the Darkling lets out an inhuman, almost keening sound, slams his hands together, and sends them all into darkness.
