    The ten-year plan was never going to work. Fortunately, thanks to Yuna, Shane and Ilya now have a new and improved plan that could have them safe and happy in just a year or two's time. They just have to want it bad enough.

    Ottawa a year early. Support from friends and family. Therapy. Rebranded images. A more confident and secure Shane. A public friendship hard launch. A relationship soft launch.

    There's a lot to do. It's time to put in the work.

    "No! Do not tell me to sit down. Why aren't you going to him? There's no way someone doesn't love you, Shane. Come on. Please. God, please, Shane, stand up, and we'll go." It was Hayden's turn to sob now, and Shane just shook his head.

     

    "He doesn't want me. He told me, and that's when I started coughing these fucking flowers up. Even if I hunt him down and he says he loves me, it won't work if it isn't true. It'll just make it kill me faster. This is it, Hayd, this is all the time I have left." Shane stood up and walked around to his two best friends. He had tried to be strong during this conversation, tried to keep his fear in check, but there's only so much one can do when telling their family they're on borrowed time.

     

    Or, Shane Hollander contracts Hanahaki when Ilya turns him down in Tampa. To make sure Ilya doesn't feel responsible Shane writes a letter for him, meant to be read after his death. Ilya gets his hands on it early.

    Of course Ilya wasn't going to choose him.

    And now, he stood in their kitchen like a stranger, having to pretend to be okay with the fact that Ilya went out and hooked up with Svetlana on a night meant to celebrate hockey's greatest. A party he wasn't even invited to as a captain himself.

    He spent the entire day coming up with meticulous loopholes and justifications for something that was actually quite simple—nobody remembered. Shane was wholeheartedly forgotten and he was too proud, or maybe dense, to figure it out himself.

    Or, the one where Ilya forgets Shane’s birthday. Coping ensues.
