Summary
Eren contemplates the cycle of violence and the cruelty of the universe during a thunderstorm.
The wind buffets the little cabin tucked up against a copse of pines at the edge of the valley. Eren listens to the roof groan and the rain lash against the wooden shutters. Beside him, Mikasa stirs, eyelids fluttering, and lapses back into sleep. He considers going out to check the barn and the henhouse, but the screech of the wind and the rolling thunder send him back to the comfort of their bed.
He runs his hands down Mikasa’s side, holding her close (he reminds himself he’s not afraid of thunderstorms). His hand rests on her belly, slightly rounded now in the last days of summer, the tight skin and muscle cradling their child. The baby moves under his hand, a gentle shifting inside her, and he strokes the place where he feels the push of tiny limbs.

The bed creaks. Above her a wasp buzzes in the rafters, lazily circling the dried herbs and braids of onions and garlic and cured meat hung in the loft. Eren's breath is hot on her neck.
