“Luffy, I’m never going to eat a Devil Fruit.”
Luffy looks confused by Zoro’s statement, out of the blue. They’re sharing a bed, sharing heat, and Luffy is really warm and really sleepy as he listens.
“Eh? Okay?”
“Because I want to always be able to save you if you fall in the sea.”
Luffy really looks at him then, understanding, maybe, or questioning. “Zoro, but there’s other people who can save me, you don’t have to worry about that, that’s why we’re building this crew, right?”
That’s why we’re building this crew, Luffy says, and he might not mean anything from it but it means something to Zoro. They’re his family, his nakama, a bond not so easily broken, so how can he tell Luffy how he feels right now, like a piece of himself lives perched on one of Luffy’s ribs, watchful and possessive.
“That’s right.”

Summary
The Straw Hats find it a little weird that they don’t have a first mate. Whenever they ask, Luffy just laughs and says they do. Which is weirder, because none of the crew have ever met this so-called first mate.
A time-travel au, in which a captain and his first mate go back to the very beginning, and figures they can do more good apart than together. At least for now.
