    Bookmarker's Notes

She is not linear. She knows there will be a moment when the running ends. He must know too, her Doctor, even without her vision. You cannot avoid a Fact forever, no matter where you flee.

Jack clings to her, will always have clung, the same way he clings to life, unable to let go. He's there, ever and always, and also right here, right now, and it's too much. He feels it too, her Doctor. Their fear is one. They run.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Jack has seen too many. It's not taken him many years of immortality to understand why the Doctor leaves people behind, never to return: much easier than seeing them dead and buried. If they left, they're still out there - for a time traveller, they'll always still be out there. He could visit any time.

    That's why he doesn't.

Jack, though, has never managed that. He stands at another friend's grave, and he knows. He'll always be the one left behind.

Better to have loved and lost ... In his better moments, he still manages to believe it.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Years, decades, centuries, millennia - Jack can't imagine they'll ever tire of each other. But two people can't be everything to each other. Not even, or perhaps especially not, two immortals. They are in each other's orbit, pulling at each other, tethered to each other by inevitable gravity. But they're each their own, too.

    It's what makes this work.

"I'd have left everything behind for him. I'd have given everything up for him." Desperate. Longing. Longing, still.
"And you think I would have objected? Even if it could never have ended well. I know you had to try. And you deserved that much."
    He could only stare.
"Doctor. He was the last of your kind, and you loved him. Do you really think I'd begrudge you your grief? That I'm so petty as that?"

"It is thought that natural pearls form under a set of accidental conditions when a microscopic intruder or parasite enters a bivalve mollusk, and settles inside the shell. [...] As a response to an irritant inside its shell the mollusk creates a pearl as a defense mechanism." (Wikipedia)

    Bookmarker's Notes

"It's only when he tells Jack what happened to him on the Game Station, at the whim of a human child with the time vortex running through her veins, that he realises: Jack is the opposite of the Time War. Not something deleted but something added. Not death, but life. The final act of the Time War, contradicting itself: giving life. As he looks at the horror before him, at Jack, alive in the deadliest radiation, in the orange light he sees: Jack's future. A Fact, but full of life, and hope, and humanity, palpable and beautiful, right there at the core of the eternal. Now that he's finally looking, he cannot look away.
