Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.

"Yeah, so... That's clearly not the package we were waiting for." Zoey says slowly, blinking like she’s not entirely sure her eyes are working right.
"Yep, definitely not." Rumi echoes, her voice flat but her eyes locked on the opened cardboard box with the exact expression of someone watching a bomb tick. Her mouth hangs slightly open.
They're standing in the middle of the living room, looming over the coffee table where the box had been set down. Inside, nestled in brown packing paper, is a smaller, sleeker box. Its front is taken up by a glossy, life-size picture of what’s inside, and it leaves very little to the imagination. It’s… anatomically detailed. Almost offensively so.
OR
Rumi and Zoey accidentally open a package meant for Mira, discover something very realistic (and hot) inside, and watch her get extremely flustered. Which, naturally, only leaves them with one logical next step: tease her until she breaks.

Summary
From the moment Rumi was born, Celine moulded her to be King of Great Joseon. Rumi was smart, athletic, and capable, nearly perfect except for one glaring deficiency—Rumi was a girl. Celine hid this secret from everyone, raising Rumi as a boy and fooling the entire kingdom into believing that their king was a man. Rumi accepted this lie, knowing that revealing her secret would cost both her and Celine their lives.
While the kingdom generally accepted their king’s more feminine facial features, the lack of a queen was something that simply could not be tolerated. At the late age of twenty-five, their king needed to be married and producing heirs and both Celine and Rumi knew that they would have to acquiesce to their courtiers' demands or face civil unrest.
Luckily, Celine has the perfect candidate in mind.
