Summary
Alex is lost. The next logical step would be to try to track him down, like, in person. But he’s not going to do that. That’s insane behavior. Those are the actions of someone who doesn’t know how to take a hint, even though Alex can’t scrub the words you’re incredible from his mind. He’s folded and refolded the note a hundred times in an effort to forget.
James wouldn’t write that if he didn’t mean it. Right?
But Alex is not, he is not, going to prowl around the city with irrational optimism that James will also be out on the same street.
He's not that desperate.
Or: Alex's one unforgettable night with a mystery guy named James turns into a search across New York City to find him again. He's just missing a key few details along the way.

Summary
Honestly, the costume makes no sense, seeing as the haunted house Alex waves people into resembles neither a circus nor a house. It's some slap-shod mom-and-pop maze on an acre of property usually reserved for a kitschy, family-friendly pumpkin patch, called Haunt-O-Stroll (name pending). When the permits fell through for hayrides, the owners converted the paths into a walking route next to old shacks, overgrown hedges, and the half-dismantled backdrops from the local high school's production of Beetlejuice.
Alex had asked during his job interview—they insisted on conducting them, even if he didn't hear of anyone who was actually turned away from the part-time gig—what the theme was. Mr. Richards said scary. Scary is more of a lifestyle than the theme, but Alex didn't correct him. Maybe he should have.
Or: Alex is a scare actor at the local haunted attraction and keeps scaring this one guy who should absolutely not be there (but keeps coming back?)

“Henry fucking Fox, I thought you were smart. I’m saying we can be friends with benefits, obviously.”
Henry lets out a wheezing noise and then looks past Alex’s shoulder, his eyes reflecting the bright lights. He pauses for a few more seconds, which feel like a lifetime to Alex, before he perceptibly juts his chin out and then shrugs casually.
“As I said earlier, you know what, I think it's a bad idea. But I think you're right.”
Alex grins. “I have the best ideas.”
“Yeah, convenient. And you don’t like me, so no complications at all.”
Alex frowns at that, feeling that there’s something wrong with that statement, but before he can question it in his head, Henry resumes walking.
“My roommate is away for the weekend, actually,” Henry calls out.
Or, Alex and Henry are regulars at the same coffee shop. They have designated tables and a convenient friendship, with benefits... until it becomes totally complicated.- Language:

Summary
Alex has been thinking lately that the way he wants to shove Henry, the most attractive English Literature nerd in the history of language, against the nearest wall and wreck him isn’t straight behaviour at all.
OR: After a one-night stand with Henry, Alex decides that, even though he had the best night of his life, he wants to explore his sexuality.
And he has a great time, until he doesn't, and it might be too late to get back who he once let go.
