The other boy slowly lowers his arm back to his side as he meets Charles’ gaze. His eyes are scrutinizing. “There isn’t time, unfortunately,” he says, hushed, “for a full explanation. So, in short order: my name is Edwin Payne, yes, I too was sacrificed to Sa’al by my classmates at St. Hilarion’s, and both of our souls have been traded to the creature that resides here. Unlike Sa’al, the creature has no qualms about torturing souls and prefers to chase its prey. It will be following the trail I have left behind. Hide here. I will lead it off.”
Or: Charles Rowland is sacrificed in the same ritual that killed Edwin Payne, seventy-three years earlier, only a short time before Edwin would have made it out of Hell on his own. Now, instead of being responsible for only himself, Edwin's got to get the both of them out of Hell. It's not going to be easy.

Summary
The fae have a bad reputation for trickery and deception but, well, it's not quite that simple. The favor of the fae, you see, is often more dangerous than their fury.
In which Edwin kind of does a favor for something a little beyond mortal ken and accidentally gets Charles re-lifed. Without him. In 2024.
Charles knows something is up, but he can't quite figure out what, there's a niggle in the back of his mind, a name on the tip of his tongue, someone he expects when he turns around who just, isn't there.
As for Edwin, well, isn't it better this way? Charles can go to shows, eat spagetti, grow old, fall in love, he was more than Edwin deserved. Right? 30 years is enough. He shouldn't be selfish. Not if it's Charles. Not if Charles can be happy.

"You know, it is the strangest thing, Charles," Edwin says. "I look at you, and I know who you are, and I can remember loving you. I remember being in love with you.”
“You remember," Charles repeats slowly. "But, what? The spell made you stop fancying me?” he asks, only half-jokingly. Perhaps it would make things easier, if Edwin weren’t in love with him.
But Edwin shakes his head. “Not exactly. I am not lacking any attachment to you in particular. I am simply- lacking.”
Or: A spell removes Edwin's love for Charles. Charles is not coping well.

Charles wakes up in the hospital after the incident with his mates and everything is—well, pretty aces actually. His dad’s being nice to him, his mates—former, now—have either been kicked out of school or are staying away from him, and he’s got a new roommate.
Edwin is kind and funny and really clever, and, best of all, he seems to think Charles is pretty great too. So what if he’s sometimes a little bit weird? Charles is still determined to get to know him better.
