Not for the first time has a nightmare woken him from sleep. Rest has never come gently to Rudo.
Ever since his fall from the Sphere, sleep isn't a refuge - it's a trap. Again and again, the dark gives him Regto bloodied and dying, begging him to run, while the faces of the Sphere residents blur into hollow, accusing shapes that scream murder until the word seems to split the air apart. Sometimes the dreams narrow themselves to his hands, to the scars his parents left there, throbbing with a pain so fierce, it feels alive. Waking up drowning in his own panic is a solitary ritual. Or, it used to be.
Because the Abyss is cruel, but the Cleaners protect their own. And when the screaming in Rudo's head gets too loud to bear, there is one person who refuses to let him drown.
Or: Five times Rudo finds comfort in Enjin, who keeps his nightmares at bay, and discovers how it feels to fall in love along the way.

Summary
The boy's airways were blocked — inhalation choked off, exhalation intercepted. His stifled whimpers were whipped into fresh cream by Tamsy's tongue, only making him taste sweeter. Soon, Rudo's eyes rolled back, his senses fading until the world dissolved into nothing but the sensation of Tamsy kissing him.
So this was the feeling of a "kiss."
In the split second before losing consciousness, Rudo thought:
It felt so much like "being devoured."
