Summary
“You missed some,” Eddie said.
Buck let out a breath that was almost a laugh.
“Did I?”
“Yeah.”
“Where?”
Eddie held up his hand.
Buck looked at the frosting on Eddie’s knuckle.
His eyes stayed there a second longer than they needed to.
Then he stepped closer, his hip almost brushing Eddie’s knee.
“Here?” Buck asked.
His voice had gone softer.
Eddie nodded once.
Buck caught Eddie’s wrist again.
This time, Eddie noticed the way Buck held him. Thumb against his pulse. Fingers loose, like Eddie could pull away if he wanted to.
He did not want to.
Buck bent his head and put his mouth to Eddie’s knuckle.

Summary
“You know,” Maddie says, waving a hand in a how silly! gesture before Buck can get the word out. “The competition.”
Eddie redirects his gaze to Maddie. “Competition?”
He could drop his glass on the concrete. Or yell fire! convincingly enough to buy him enough time to run. He could make himself throw up, or pretend to faint, or just make a break for his truck and drive it directly into the ocean.

Summary
“You don’t have to thank me,” Eddie says with a half-hearted attempt at a laugh. Buck smiles wryly, and it feels like a small victory.
“No, I do. I’ve been obsessing over how you might react if I—if I ever told you. I didn’t think I ever would.”
The admission breaks Eddie’s heart a little more. “Buck…”
“When I saw you in that elevator, Eddie,” Buck continues softly, staring hard at his knees. “I thought…”
He trails off; Eddie knows. Images of Buck in that striped shirt flash in his mind, his face and body beat to hell and yet still one of the best sights he’d ever seen because it meant Buck was alive.
“Anyway, I meant it,” Buck says, shaking Eddie back to the present. He still has his hand on Buck’s shoulder, thumb smoothing across his clavicle absently. “Nothing has to change, I’m—working on it.”
Eddie frowns. “Working on it?”
Buck huffs a laugh. “Yeah. Getting over it, I mean.”
Eddie drops his hand.
Or: Buck confesses, and Eddie gets a stomachache. These things surely aren't related.

Summary
“I bet I could last longer than you at ‘just the tip,’” Eddie finally says, his voice dipping down into a throaty rasp. “If we tried right now.”
Buck sputters. “How would we even try right now?”
Eddie shrugs nonchalantly, but there’s a dangerous glint in his eye. “With each other.”
Buck’s mouth drops open and he stares at Eddie for what feels like an eternity. Then he bursts out laughing. “Ha, a friendly little best bro game of ‘just the tip.’ Good one, Eddie. Hilarious.”
But Eddie isn’t laughing.
