Summary
Her hand hovered above the doorknob. She shouldn’t. Kaz valued his privacy like a miser valued his coin. But the sound came again—an exhale, ragged and low, and this time she couldn’t ignore it.
Inej slipped inside.
The lamp was low, burning more shadow than light. At first, she thought the dark heap on the floor beside the bed was just discarded clothing, but then it shifted, and her breath caught.
“Kaz.”
He sat slouched against the mattress, his cane discarded to one side, his shirt smeared crimson across the abdomen. The dark patch was spreading, his gloved hand pressed futilely against it. His head lolled slightly toward her voice, eyes glazed and unfocused, but still sharp enough to spark when he recognized her.
“Hello, Inej,” he intoned lowly, the ghost of his smirk tugging at his mouth. “If you’re trying to rob me, you’ll have to get in line.”

In a twist of events, Kaz is gravely wounded and Inej isn't about to let his stubbornness get him killed. She sets about patching him up.

Summary
He couldn’t help the way Wylan’s words kept echoing in his mind. In some weird way, they had found a steady, but eerie rhythm. Kaz thought this might be what Wylan’s stream of consciousness sounded like. Then, he recoiled and told himself to stop imagining what was going on inside of Wylan’s mind.
“He might try to kill me,” the young mercher had said. “It wouldn’t be the first time. He might as well try to drown me again.”
The casualness of it all was what stung the most, Kaz thought.

Kaz wakes choking on it.
The room is wrong. The air smells like clean linen and rain instead of rot and river-sludge. For a breathless, terrible second, his mind insists this is a trick. He expects the press of bodies, the creak of a boat that never stops rocking. He expects Jordie’s weight. The stink of plague. The water.
His fingers curl, grasping for a cane that isn’t there, for something solid enough to anchor him to the present—but the present won’t settle. The past surges up instead, sharp as broken glass.

He drags in air through his teeth. It hurts. His heart is galloping, a traitor, pounding like it wants out of his chest. Sweat slicks his spine. His body is already braced for pain that hasn’t arrived yet.

Kaz Brekker wakes up from the recurring nightmare where he's once again sinking to the bottom of the canals, into a body ten years older, that has grown and progressed and healed and weathered.
