    Good riddance, he thinks. Or maybe feels obligated to think. He’s not sure. It feels like a natural thing to think about a brother who hit you and insulted you and extorted you for most of your short, miserable time together. He’s thought about it before, Alexei dying. The life he lived had not been conductive to longevity.

    I am the last Rozanov, he thinks, and that is an emotion he can parse, finally: closure. Like setting the last piece down in a puzzle.

    It’s only after the first puff of smoke escapes his lips that Ilya remembers Alexei’s daughter.

He’s had dreams of his jersey getting retired here. He doesn’t want to leave. He wants everything to go back to how it was before Hayden showed up at his door yesterday. He wants to retire a Voyager, he wants to be a Voyager, he’s always wanted to be a Voyager. But he can’t turn back time, and he can’t make himself think that the environment is going to magically get better. He’s already muted the Montreal Voyagers chat after too many jokes at his expense. If they’re that confident behind a screen, who knows how they’ll feel in person. He’s their captain. He should be better than this. This shouldn’t be getting to him. He wants to stop thinking about this. He wants Ilya."

    or:
    Shane gets outed to Montreal a lot earlier than he originally planned to (aka never). The plan he and Ilya made needs to change drastically, as Shane finds himself the one trading teams instead of Ilya. Some things stay the same, but some things change.

    Flying down the ice, Ilya takes the puck around the back of the net and backhands it towards the farthest corner of the top shelf of the Metros net. It’s a nearly impossible shot, especially at this speed, but Ilya’s executed it perfectly. Surely not even Hollander could-

    Hollander’s glove whips out at a blinding speed and snags the puck out of the air, and Ilya snarls, hissed Russian profanity spitting between his clenched teeth.

    The score is only 1-0 in favor of the Metros. But that single goal might as well be worth 10 with how impossible it feels to match. All they need is one goal. One.

    But it seems like Hollander isn’t going to let them have it.

    OR

    Shane goes on a slightly different path, becoming a goalie instead of a forward and joining the draft one year earlier than Ilya. In different positions, and in different draft years, they're not pitted as rivals against each other from the start, but they catch each other's attention anyway. Shane's goalie-ness allows him to be freer about who he is and what he wants, and Ilya tries not to trip over his skates as he catches glimpses of those freckles behind a hockey mask.

    (He doesn't quite succeed).
